Well, one of the really important and often discussed issues Christians have to eventually deal with on a personal level is the subject of humility. I admit there are many others as equally important in a Christian’s walk with the Lord but this particular issue surfaces quite often and it has again in my life lately and immediate circle of my spiritual family. So, I really feel that I need to put my two cents worth in.

What is humility anyway? Humility if we are to look at what it means in the Bible and if we are to look at what it means in the old Greek of the scriptures has the meaning of lowering ones self to a position of low altitude and to essentially seek a spot of being near zero and as close as one can come to nothing. Of course we should bear in mind that this is the direct opposite of raising ones self to a high lofty position looking down on your neighbor otherwise known as pride and arrogance whose main goal is self exaltation and to boast of it. “Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Prov. 16:18 and “LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.” Psalms 131:1.

So what does that mean? Is it bad and wrong to have a high position and to have responsibility in guiding people’s lives, advice giving, and making decisions that are to the best interest of the decision taker? Well, yes it could be, depending on the situation and on the surrounding circumstances and perhaps the best way to put this is it depends a whole lot on the motivation behind the decisions.

Consider the case where a pastor head of a church and spiritual leader of a group of people needs to make a decision for the congregation. What if he claims that he needs to stay low and avoid having to exalt himself in such a high position that expects from him to influence peoples lives and perhaps the future of the church, so he claims that needs to take a really humble position and low profile in all of this so he avoids action due to the fact that he wants to remain humble and lets all else decide for the church. I am prompted here to ask if that pastor has ever felt God lead him and if God ever really wanted him to be in that position. Has this pastor acted humbly or even better yet – is this true humility? I think not !

And what about the pastor that has “worked his way to the top” of church leadership by always doing the right thing being at the right place at the right time and has gained the trust and love of all. There comes a time when a decision needs to be taken by this man so he takes it unto himself to decide without consulting the congregation and so he puts himself in the lowly position of totally ignoring his desires but puts himself “below” all else so the church can benefit from this decision. Of course the rest of the people around him could not take part because he has always felt that the Lord as led him to this decision and to the position he holds now. And of course, his lifelong worth of work to come to where his is at today proves that the Lord wanted him to be there. I think not.! This sounds more like “arrogant humility” rather than true humility.

And consider the Pastor who has to take a decision affecting all his congregation and confers with the elders concerning the decision and the particular outcomes. He just can’t seem to convince them that the consequences of the decision they want to make will eventually have negative and detrimental effects on the church so he is all alone against the crowd knowing that his persistent and faithful prayers have given him an answer from God contrary to the rest of the crowd. But he gives in , reduces himself to nothing disregards his own desires and self and gives in to the rest of the congregation in love and
Respect for their majority decision. Is this man humble in the sight of God? ‘Bout as humble as we have come to yet!

Finally, I want you to consider the case of the man who has had a nudge in his heart from years before suspecting and then finally realizing that God wants him to follow a life of faith in the footsteps of Jesus. This man has so far had a life of everything but faith , devotion and prayer to God yet he has had to struggle for years now against his own desires and the peer pressure from all his friends. Yet, he gives in and allows God to slay his desires and wordly lifestyle. He expects nothing from people around him except to be in constant prayer and be led by God every day. Pretty humble huh ?

You take your pick brother as to who gets your vote. Just make sure that you pray about it and allow God to lead you to that low position where He can be in charge not you !
That place where you can be the zero and He can be the 1 (one) leading you.
